Hibernal Apple

Historical USDA watercolour of the Hibernal Apple apple, painted 1860

Hibernal is a heritage apple cultivar that originated in Russia (before 1870). Fruit large, oblate-conic, yellow with red flush. The U.S. Department of Agriculture documented it with a watercolour study (1860), painted by Amanda Almira Newton, as official botanical identification records made before colour photography.
