Long Island Russet Apple

Historical USDA watercolour of the Long Island Russet Apple apple, painted c.1886–1942

Long Island Russet is a heritage apple cultivar that originated in Long Island, US (before 1820). It was grown primarily for cider. Flesh yellowish, dry, sweet. The U.S. Department of Agriculture documented it with a watercolour study, painted by Bertha Heiges, as official botanical identification records made before colour photography.
